Alphabet Collage

Are you trying to teach your child the alphabet? While you may spend hours rehearsing the ABC's simple words with your child, making an alphabet collage is a one easy way to give them a multidimensional learning exercise. Creating an alphabet collage is simple and it's a lot of fun for children as they get to learn and play while creating a fun learning tool.

As you make an alphabet collage, focus on one letter at a time. By starting with one letter and focusing on it, you make the learning process easier for your child because they'll be able to associate each letter with colors, shapes and different objects. Toddlers start to learn more than 20 new words a day; sometimes they can learn over 50 new words in one day. For this article we will start with the letter "A".

Ask your child which words start with the letter "A". They'll probably give you answers like apple, apricot or ant. Grab some magazines or print off some pictures from the internet of a variety of items that start with the letter "A". If possible, find a picture of a loved one whose name starts with an "A" and add a picture of that person to the collage page as well. Cut out a letter "A" from felt and then have your child arrange a bunch of pictures of objects that all start with the letter "A" onto a sheet of paper, including the felt "A". This collage is a wonderful way for them to connect various foods, people, places and things to the letter "A". Point to some of the different pictures and ask your child how they'd say the word, then ask them what type of sound the object makes or what the object does. This is a great way to teach your children the letters in the alphabet and new words at the same time.

Depending upon how creative you want to get, either use regular loose leaf sheets of paper to create your alphabet collage or make an entire book using construction paper or maybe even scrap booking materials. This book is a great way to teach your children the letters of the alphabet. Consider laminating each page so they'll be resistant to ripping and tearing.

Once your child has mastered the letter "A", move on to the letter "B". Here are a few words that begin with the letter B:

Bear
Broom
Banana
Brown (use the color)

Try to let your children identify pictures and things that start with the letter "B" as this challenges them. Have them help you arrange all of the different letter "B" objects on the page for the letter "B" until it is ready to be laminated. Then you can move onto the letter "C".

As you move on to the letter "C", hopefully your child is starting to understand what the alphabet collage is and they're getting excited about choosing objects that start with each letter of the alphabet. Try a few of these things that begin with the letter "C":
Car
Cat
Cookie
Coconut
Cantaloupe

Creating a alphabet collage is a lot of fun and there are hundreds of different ways to do it. An alphabet collage book is also nice because it's portable so it can go with you on long car rides or serve as an educational distraction during times when your children need to sit quietly for long periods of time.
